Show Tips

What the best way to show my dog in the ring?  Head up, down, level top line, etc.  This is a benefit dog show, so not a “real” show, but there will be some good dogs there, as it’s a good place to get your dog prepared if you do real showing.  I don’t show her but she is quite a picture to see, so I want to show her at her best.  (Plus I’m way too competitive for my own good :) !   Any other tips on coat, leashes, chokers, etc. would be helpful.

  1. Hey Suzanne – If I have trouble with one of my kiddos “side-winding” a lot (where he/she does not gait in a straight line) as they are moving towards and/or away from the judge, I will practice moving them along the fence-line. Then, as they deviate from the straight line, they would bump into either the fence, or me :). If they have a tendency to want to sniff at the ground a lot, I just given them a simple correction. A show collar placed higher up around the neck (closer to the head/ears) will give you more control and also doesn’t interfere with the coat around the neck. Practicing getting them to show expression (ears up), being comfortable around new people (some strange judge touching them all over the place), and standing still for exam, bite-check, etc. are also good training points. Grooming… that could probably be an entirely different topic all in itself :). Won’t have time today to go into that one, but maybe another member will be able to, in the meantime. Great questions! Thanks! Jess
